Mixed action and fortunes
Over the last week, we have netted two of our feeders, re-lived an activity not done for over 30 years and tried another roost.
The roost was a little disappointing with only 26 birds caught--most of which were a mixed tit flock--although it was encouraging to see 4 Long tailed tits and a Goldcrest after all the hard frosts we've had.
Friday evening saw us try 'sniping' at a marshy field north of Uttoxeter. We are a bit rusty on technique but we will try again and hope to catch some of the many Common Snipe feeding in the field. However, a great prize was represented by two Jack Snipe caught--the first for over 30 years by members of the group--there should be a pic below...
Feeders are getting good as natural food diminishes. This morning a team went to a regular garden feeder near Stourbride and caught 92 new birds--mainly Great and Blue tits--but a female Blackcap and an adult male Sparrowhawk added some spice.
A couple of days ago our woodland feeder delivered about 30 new birds and plenty of interesting retraps. The new birds involved 2 Redpoll and the first Brambling of the winter--along with 3 Great Spotted Woodpeckers.
We hope our notes help some of our readers from foreign parts to keep in touch with things back in blighty.
