The Portuguese Connection!

Sounds a bit like a corny, unimaginative film title, but refers in fact to a snippet from the 2009 overall report on ringing for 2008 which has just arrived from the British Trust for Ornithology. This gives a full round up of all birds ringed in that year--plus a few choice recoveries of birds already ringed and retrapped elsewhere. Chiffchaff POL 094054 caught my eye. It was one of 136 Chiffs we ringed on our 2007 ringing trip to Portugal. This bird was then retrapped on 5th May 2008 in Dyfed,as a male, presumably in song on its breeding patch. Just shows how our countries are linked through birds--the site in Portugal is under development threat, and the fcat that our birds obviously spend the winter in the area gives us even more of an incentive to try to do what we can to support local groups in Potugal to resist the development. We have sent them our results--unlikely, but it may help them in some way, we hope!
